Eastern Cape police shoot four alleged robbery suspects

Eastern Cape police last night shot four alleged robbery suspects.

The suspects were shot dead outside Lusikisiki while they were traveling to Margate.

They were wanted in connection with an armed robbery case that took place at a Boxer Store in Lusikisiki on Monday morning. There they allegedly robbed the store of R59 000 before fleeing the scene.

Hawks spokesman Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said police received information about the whereabouts of the suspects and their next move yesterday.

"An operation was set up by the National Intervention Unit (NIU) with Lusikisiki SAPS in attendance. The NIU intercepted the suspects' vehicle on the road and when they tried to pull it over, the suspects opened fire on the members.

"They returned fire and fatally wounded all four suspects," Mulaudzi said.

He said on the scene they recovered three 9mm pistols and R6000 cash.

The incident took place between 8pm and 10pm.
