The Democratic Alliance yesterday painted Mthatha blue when national leader Mmusi Maimane held a vibrant rally and then took to the streets to reinforce the party’s election bid in the OR Tambo district.

Maimane was welcomed by 800 DA supporters at a local school hall which he dubbed a homecoming as he had spent some time in the Transkei during his childhood days.

Maimane did not waste time and started attacking President Jacob Zuma, labelling him as corrupt.

“Jacob Zuma belongs in prison. He should have his time in court and spend many years in jail. By 2019 Jacob Zuma will definitely be sent to prison for his corrupt activities and the money he stole from the arms deal. He may be sharing a prison cell with nobody else but Oscar Pistorius.”

Maimane, accompanied by DA provincial chairwoman Veliswa Mvenya, said the DA would win the King Sabata municipality.

His visit to Mthatha comes after the visit of EFF leader Julius Malema last weekend at the same time as ANC Women’s League president Bathabile Dlamini was campaigning in Mqanduli.

He said this year’s election on August 3 would be the most hotly contested since the dawn of democracy in 1994.

“Only the DA can bring change to the people of Mthatha, change that will create jobs, deliver better services and stop corruption. The time for Zuma to vacate office is moving faster than anticipated. The sooner he is out of that office the better.”

Maimane attacked some ANC leaders for having no morals and conscience. “They have the guts to steal money meant for the funeral of Nelson Mandela. Just imagine! What type of leaders will steal from funeral money, especially the funeral of Nelson Mandela.”

He boasted that in all DA-led municipalities not a single DA leader had been found to be corrupt, while he referred to the ANC “as a party of corruption”.

Maimane urged his party members to get ready for dirty campaign tricks. He said the ANC would come with food parcels to try to lure voters.

“Take them,” said Maimane. “We have no war with sugar, milk, meilie-meal or flour, but when you go to the ballots make sure you are not voting for food parcels, but for a party that will restore your dignity and change your life, and that is the DA.”

Calling ANC leaders heartless, he said the ruling party was looking at splurging more than R2-billion on buying a presidential jet. “They are more concerned with Nkandla airlines than the poverty facing the people of South Africa.”

He said the ineffective Zuma administration could not be compared to Nelson Mandela’s administration.

“During Mandela’s reign there were 34 cabinet members and now during Zuma’s leadership it is 74, more than double the number. We spend more money on the cabinet members than on changing the lives of the people of South Africa. More than R9-million is spent on maintaining the lifestyle of Jacob Zuma’s many wives,” said Maimane.

Representatives of AbaThembu King Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo led by prince Phandulwazi Mhlontlo attended the rally.

“Although the king's membership was terminated after he was found guilty, he is still inside his heart a DA member and has vowed to continue vote DA,” claimed Mthlontlo.
