Three teenagers held after botched armed robbery

Three King Williams Town teenagers were today arrested moments after they shot and wounded a Somali national during a botched armed robbery at his Zinyoka Village spaza shop.

According to King  police spokeswoman Lieutenant Siphokazi Mawisa, the teenagers, all aged 18 years, were arrested at Tyutyu Village after police's dog unit received information about their involvement in the shooting which took place around 4pm today.

Mawisa said the 24-year old shop owner was shot once in his lower body and that he was rushed to hospital where he is recovering and in a stable condition.

"It is alleged that the three suspects entered the shop and pretended to be buying something before they pulled out a gun and shot the victim at close range.

Nothing was taken from the shop as the alleged robbers struggled to open the security gate and later fled without taking anything," Mawisa said.

She added that, a few hours later, the suspects were arrested in a house in Tyutyu Village and a Lorcin firearm recovered.

"They have been charged with armed robbery and possession of an unlicended firearm".

They will appear at the Zwelitsha Magistrates Court later this week.
