State wants full report on ‘security breach’ at Zuma elections speech

The state wants to know how four #RememberKhwezi anti-rape protesters were able to disrupt President Jacob Zuma’s speech during the official local government elections results presentation on Saturday night.

Eyewitness News (EWN) reports that State Security Minister David Mahlobo wants a full report on the “security breach” which saw the four young women stage a silent protest during Zuma’s address at the Electoral Commission of SA (IEC) results operations centre in Pretoria.

“They have that democratic right ‚ that we respect. But equally‚ we must also respect that there are security parameters…‚” EWN quoted Mahlobo as saying at a media briefing by the inter-ministerial committee on elections on Sunday.

Meanwhile‚ one of the women who took part in the #RememberKhwezi silent protest has told eNCA television news in an interview that the protest was not planned.

Activist Simamkele Dlakavu told eNCA the decision to disrupt Zuma’s speech was spontaneous.

She added that none of the protesters had been harmed when they were removed by bodyguards.

“It was spontaneous. We refuse to be silent any more. We refuse not to name and shame rapists. We refuse to let the nation forget‚ because it happened‚” Dlakavu told the television channel.

Zuma was acquitted by the High Court in Johannesburg in 2006 of raping a friend’s daughter who was referred to in the media as ‘Khwezi’.

The four #RememberKwezi protesters may have raised the ire of the government but have received praise from scores of social media users.

One such message was from Economic Freedom Fighters deputy president Floyd Shivambu‚ who said on

Twitter: “Bravo to #SilentProsters (sic) who reminded SA that we should #RememberKhwezi. Decisive protest.”

Another Twitter user Vusi Thembekwayo tweeted: “Wow: What a brave protest. What a time to be alive. #RememberKhwezi.”
