A municipal ward candidate protest in Qunu which disrupted traffic on the busy N2 near former President Nelson Mandela’s home was yesterday temporarily suspended.

The protest leaders were yesterday locked in closed door meetings at a B&B in Qunu with an ANC regional leadership delegation led by chairman Xolile Nkompela and his deputy Pat Mdinga and SAPS members.

Traditional leaders including AbaThembu Queen Noluntu Dalindyebo, Chief Mandla Mandela and Chief Mfundo Mtirara were also present.

The regional leadership will meet with the  provincial executive  committee on August 15.

Addressing a group of about 200 people, mostly youth, after the meeting, protest leader Phikolomzi Habe said they would suspend their action.

“We have reached an agreement that we suspend the protest until after August 15. On August 15, the regional leaders and the provincial structure will sit down and discuss this matter. After that the structure will meet with us and we will take a way forward. For now we are suspending all the activities concerning the protesters,” said Habe.

Nkompela said the ANC would investigate the allegation and grievances by the community.

He said  that if the   ANC  investigation has  found some  wrongdoing, the  person even if  he has  been sworn in, will be  removed.
