Slain election candidates win wards

Several African National Congress (ANC) councillor candidates killed in the run-up to the local government elections won their wards convincingly across the country.

One of them‚ the ruling party’s Nelson Mandela Bay metro ward four candidate in Walmer‚ Nceba Dywili‚ won his ward by 81.5%‚ Sowetan reported on Wednesday.

The Democratic Alliance and Economic Freedom Fighters candidates each got only 7% of the vote.

A slain African National Congress candidate in KwaZulu-Natal‚ Bongani Sikhosana‚ won the uMuziwabantu municipality’s ward one by a similar majority — 81%.

Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) spokeswoman Kate Bapela said by-elections to replace the candidates who were killed would be held within 90 days from August 3.
