Businessman's killer sentenced to life in jail

Andile Mxakatho, the man who shot and killed well-known East London businessman Lulamile Mbewana in 2014 has beeen sentenced to life imprisonment for murder.

Mbewana  was shot and killed while in his car with a woman companion at Amalinda.  The woman was later raped in the bushes nearby. 

The accused got  10 years in prison for the rape. Cambridge police spokesman Captain Mluleki Mbi said on that fateful night of June 15 Mbewana was sitting in his car with a female companion near Amalinda Fish Farm in East London when a man knocked at the window and demanded  they open the doors of the vehicle.

"During that moment the assailant fired a shot through the window and fatally wounded Mr Mbewana.  It is alleged that the assailant demanded a cellphone from the woman at gunpoint and ordered her to search the deceased," Mbi said.

He said an iPhone and Nokia cellphones, wallet with cash and cards, wristwatch, wedding ring and a bunch of keys including car keys were taken from the victims.

"The accused then ordered the woman to the  nearby bushes where he raped her," said Mbi.

He said police investigators followed up a lead which pointed them to the whereabouts of the accused.  A firearm, iPhone keys and a wristwatch were recovered from the accused.

"The East London Regional Court imposed a life sentence for murder, 15 years for aggravated robbery and 10 years for rape," said Mbi.
