Jail for three caught red-handed with fraudulent cheques

Three fraudsters caught trying to defraud Absa bank of nearly a million rand received jail terms from the Port Elizabeth-based Specialised Commercial Crimes court.

Linda Adele Botha, 47, Johnny Fernando Ferraz, 30, and Johannes Havenga, 44 – caught presenting cloned cheques totaling R998000 at various Absa bank branches – were sentenced on Monday. Botha and Ferraz were given four-year jail terms and Havenga three.

Hawks spokeswoman Anelisa Feni said the trio were arrested by the Hawks Commercial Crime unit on April 29, the same day they presented fictitious cheques. “The suspects connived by duplicating genuine cheques and forged the owner’s signature,” she said.

“The Hawks were alerted by the bank and they were immediately arrested.”

Provincial head of Priority Crimes Major-General Nyameko Nogwanya warned anyone contemplating acts of fraud to “stop it”.
