Eastern Cape police have shot dead five suspected armed robbers near the small town of Ntabankulu.
The shooting incident took place yesterday just after 5pm.
Provincial police are yet to issue a statement on the matter. However DispatchLive has reliably been informed the shooting took place as the men were on their way to rob a supermarket in the area.
A senior police source, with details of the shooting, said: "The information about the robbery leaked to crime intelligence who quickly assembled a team of Tactical Response (TRT), Public Order Policing and visible police. They intercepted the robbers who on seeing police opened fire using an AK47 and an R1 rifle. Police returned fire and instantly killed five men, the sixth man fled the scene on foot, he is still at large."
