President Jacob Zuma has congratulated Team South Africa for an “outstanding” performance at the 2016 Rio Olympics Games in Brazil‚ noting that the team has so far produced 10 medals‚ comprising two gold‚ six silver and two bronze medals.

“We are immensely proud of the South African team for their outstanding performance at the Olympics games this year and for making and smashing national and world records.

“The team has once again put the country on the global map and proved indeed that we are a winning nation‚” said Zuma.

“We also thank the people of South Africa for their full support of our athletes‚” he added.

Zuma lauded Wayde van Niekerk for winning gold for the country‚ making world history by breaking Michael Johnson’s 17-year-old record in the 400m‚ and Caster Semenya for her “dramatic” victory in the 800m to clinch the country’s 25th gold medal in its Olympic history.
