Row may force businessman to close nightspot

Businessman Luthando Bara is considering closing his popular Bunkers Hill nightspot, Ground X, following another complaint from a neighbour.

This was initially announced by Linda Warner of Bunkers Hill, on her Facebook timeline over the weekend. Warner had posted a video and pictures of a man, believed to have been driving drunk, who had driven into a residential wall in the early hours of Saturday morning.

She called for a residents’ meeting to discuss the nightspot, which is unpopular among the residents of the suburb.

She later posted a comment telling her “Facebook friends” she had met the owners of Ground X, situated at the Philip Kats Softball Stadium, and they had decided to close the club. Warner later deleted the Facebook post.

But Bara confirmed that discussions were under way regarding the possible closure of the club.

However, he said he still had to consider the future of his 30 employees and that of the Border Softball Association, which is funded through the proceeds from the club.

“The only function of the club is to keep the stadium operational for softball players who make use of the facility, and at the moment it is only black players while the white softball players refuse to join them because they make use of Hams Sports Club.

“When I opened the club in March, it was in a state and in agreement with Border Softball. I rehabilitated the facility, which had been stripped of everything, and there have been many developments since,” he said.

Bara said he aspired to see racial integration among softball players.

“Right now it seems there’s a racial division and judging by the comments which have emerged from the post made by Linda, the issue is now over who controls the place,” he said.

Eastern Cape Softball Association's Bongani Masika said the association had no financial muscle besides the funding generated from the cub to support the stadium and the players making use of the arena.

When the Dispatch contacted Warner for comment, she declined to comment and threatened to sue the Dispatch. — mbalit@dispatch.co.za
