One of President Jacob Zuma's wives came to his defence yesterday, saying he was being attacked left, right and centre.

First lady Thobeka Madiba-Zuma was speaking at the house of former Umkhonto weSizwe veteran Mlali "Ngalitye" Ondala at NU17 in Mdantsane.

She had visited the Ondala family to pass the first family's condolences after the anti-apartheid stalwart was buried last weekend following a long battle with cancer.

She said Zuma, who declared Ondala's funeral a special provincial funeral, was heartbroken he could not send him off.

Madiba-Zuma described the president as someone who was passionate about improving the living conditions of struggle veterans.

“The president is passionate about his MK veterans. He always 'says that if anything that you can help me with, please look after the veterans. Please look after the people we were in the struggle together because I am busy'.

“Siyabonga udliwa yizinja ngapha nangapha – ziyamnephula (loosely translated: we can see he is being attacked left, right and centre),” she said, adding that she had committed to help some veterans through her foundation with monthly groceries and health needs.

Her comments comes as calls for Zuma to quit have been mounting in recent weeks.
