Young man dies in accident, car strikes tree

A 24-year-old man was declared dead on the scene after his vehicle ran off the road and struck a tree in East London this morning.

Police spokesman Captain Mluleki Mbi said the accident occurred at 4am.

He said the driver who cannot be identified at this moment was the only occupant of the vehicle. He was driving a white Corsa Lite on Union Avenue from the East London CBD towards Cambridge, when the vehicle struck a tree.

"The were no other vehicle involved in the accident. Other motorists drove past the scene and alerted police, the driver who we understand is from Mdantsane was declared dead on the scene," Mbi said. He said a case of culpable homicide was opened for investigation.

Meanwhile, in another incident,  East London police say a driver of a Toyota Tazz and his two passengers were rushed to hospital with minor injuries after the vehicle overturned on the Settler's Way this morning.

Police spokeswoman Warrant Officer Hazel Mqala said emergency personnel at the scene had treated the driver for head injuries before transporting him and his passengers to hospital. Mqala said police were investigating a case of reckless and negligent driving.
