SIU to probe district municipalities‚ provincial department - on Zuma's orders

President Jacob Zuma has signed proclamations authorising the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to investigate certain matters in respect of the affairs of two district municipalities and a provincial department.

The SIU will investigate the Mopani District Municipality in Limpopo‚ Harry Gwala District Municipality in KwaZulu-Natal‚ as well as of the Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and Mjindi Farming in KwaZulu-Natal.

All three SIUs‚ according to the Presidency‚ will look into alleged improper and unlawful conduct by councillors‚ officials or employees of the municipalities and department.

They will also look at unlawful expenditure of public money‚ irregular and unapproved acquisitive act‚ intentional or negligent loss of public money or damage to public property‚ as well as improper conduct by any person‚ which has caused or may cause serious harm to the interests of the public.

The proclamations do not state why the investigations are required.
