Countdown Festival a raging success again

EAST Londoners ushered in 2016 in style with more than 5000 people partying up a storm into the wee hours of January 1 at the Countdown Music Festival at Buffalo Park Stadium.

The show, which is in its second year, was a great success with national and local artists entertaining a jovial crowd that packed the stadium’s A field.

Gates opened at midday December 31, and revellers started streaming in, armed with their cooler boxes and camp chairs. Roads close to the event venue had to be closed off to allow partygoers easy access to the stadium.

Event organiser Oyama Dyosiba said this year’s show proved to be more successful than the previous year and promised the event would become an annual showpiece.

“The Countdown Music Festival was a great success again this year and we look forward to hosting the people of the Eastern Cape for the third annual show. I want to give thanks to the people who came to support us. We are open to any suggestions. Let us start the conversation now,” Dyosiba said.

Local acts, which included DJ Yoba Unltd, first gave an impressive performance, which set the bar high for national artists. An impressed crowd gave resounding cheers for popular Limpopo-born DJ Ganyani, of Xigubu fame when he took to the stage before the sun set on December 31.

Speaking to the Daily Dispatch, Ganyani, who had brought along his 12-year-old son, said it was his first time performing at an East London Countdown event.

“East London’s hospitality is amazing. I really like it here. It is the best place in the Eastern Cape to play,” he said.

Singer and actress Kelly Khumalo wowed the audience with some old hits like Qinisela, as well as some of her latest offerings.

The climax of the event was when Durban-based artist Professor took to the stage just after the countdown to the new year, taking people down memory lane with some of his signature tunes, including KOTW Anthem.

East London experienced its first December 31 without rain showers in years.
