The Eastern Cape finally has a permanent head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) in Major-General Nyameko Nogwanya, who has vowed to curb political killings.

Nogwanya, who hails from the Eastern Cape, was appointed to the position this week by the national head of the Hawks, Lieutenant-General Mthandazo Ntlemeza.

Major-General Kholekile Galawe, who was acting provincial Hawks head for years, has been appointed as head of the Hawks in Northern Cape.

Speaking to the Daily Dispatch from his East London office, Nogwanya declared war on political killings.

“My message to the people of the Eastern Cape as the head of the Hawks is this: we are going to decisively deal with these so-called political killings, where people are killing each other under the banner of local government elections.

“I want to say to those people, they will canvass for their positions while wearing an orange prison uniform.”

Police are investigating a suspected attempted hit on Mhlontlo municipality council speaker and OR Tambo ANC chair Xolile Nkompela.

Zukile Nyontso, a member of Nkompela’s security detail, was killed in a hail of bullets in what was believed to have been an attempt to kill Nkompela. No arrests have been made.

Nogwanya, 46, is an advocate and has a master’s degree in law. He was born in Dumsi location, Ntabankulu, between Mount Frere and Mount Ayliff. He joined the SAPS in Mthatha in 1994, fresh from completing his law degree, and was soon transferred to the SAPS legal service department, where he served as an adviser on crime operations, support services, detectives and litigation.

He moved to Port Elizabeth in 1997 and continued serving as a legal adviser. In 2002, he was transferred to Polokwane, were he was appointed section head of support services.

He moved to Mpumalanga in 2012 and was promoted to major-general.

“My appointment means that I directly play a crucial role of serving the people of this province by making sure that money intended for service delivery due for them reaches them, because I am going to put all those who steal public funds behind bars.” — zwangam@dispatch.co.za
