BCM takes damaged shelter

A broken down temporary shelter donated to a blind man from Mdantsane who was told to fix it up himself has been removed following a report by the Daily Dispatch last week.

The Dispatch reported that a Buffalo City Metro (BCM) councillor and housing officials were in hot water after they gave unemployed Buyile Kwezi a shelter with no roof and broken windows.

Following the report, BCM workers removed the shelter in NU7.

Kwezi said there were no details on his request for housing.

BCM housing portfolio head councillor Nomiki Mgezi said: “We are currently looking into finding alternative housing.”

Ward councillor Sizinzo Madikane said: “He said he wanted it even if it was old. There was nothing wrong with that shelter.”

Buffalo City Metro spokesman Keith Ngesi said: “The structure was sponsored by BCMM with the understanding that as and when the missing components were found the structure would be completed and handed over to the owner.”
