Two EC models vie for Miss Junior Teen title

Two Eastern Cape teenagers will be competing in this year’s Miss Junior Teen South Africa.

Sixteen-year-olds Abulele Dlungele from Mthatha and Phelisa Mini from Mount Fletcher head for Pretoria next month to join other teens from all over the country who are competing in the pageant.

Abulele started modelling at the age of 12 and has won numerous titles in Mthatha. She is the current Miss Eastern Cape Teen.

Her mother, Feziwe Dlungele, said they had to raise funds to make Abulele’s dream of competing in the national pageant come true.

“She enjoys modelling and we do not want to disappoint her. I know she would be very upset if she did not go,” Dlungele said.

The Holy Cross Kiddieland Grade 11 pupil said she hoped to enter Miss World one day.

Phelisa’s father, Mzamo Mini, said their daughter could not wait for the competition.

“There aren’t many beauty pageants in Matatiele so this is a big opportunity for her. She is excited about this and we will support her all the way,” he said.

Mini said Phelisa had shown interest in modelling from a young age.

“We used to call her Miss SA and she is truly following that route. We hope she will enter Miss SA one day,” Mini said.

Pageants SA founder Carolyn Botha said the competition had been running for the past 17 years and had supported more than 3000 charities.

“This pageant is not about what the girls can get, but rather what can they do for others. We encourage a lot of charity work,” she said.

Botha said the winner would help the charity organisation Dignity Dreams to raise funds for sanitary towels for girls in rural areas.

Over the years they had had to ask families to pay for their own travelling and accommodation expenses.

“Sponsors don’t see the benefit of supporting a pageant even though ours focuses on helping the community. We tried to pay for everything in the past but that didn’t work,” she said.

The contestants would be expected to attend workshops for a week from March 22. The pageant will take place on March 26 at the ACPP Hall in Pretoria. — poliswap@dispatch.co.za
