Top star wows ‘Voice’ judges

Zwelitsha-born singer Sibulele Miti had all the judges on The Voice SA begging to work with her on the show.

Miti’s rendition of Bob Dylan’s Knocking on Heaven’s Door saw all four judges turning for her within seconds into her performance.

The 27-year-old singer said she was not expecting them to turn quickly. “I was shocked, I couldn’t believe it. I am excited that they all received me so well,” she said.

The first season of The Voice SA started on January 31 and the vocal coaches are The Parlotones frontman Kahn Morbee, award-winning afro-soul sensation Lira, Afrikaans singer Bobby van Jaarsveld and South African rock queen Karen Zoid.

There are three phases to The Voice SA. Seven episodes are blind auditions, during which the coaches sit with their backs to the talent in order to make decisions based on the performer’s vocal ability.

The second phase is the battle rounds, when each coach pits their singers against each other in pairs. At the end, the coach decides which pair stays on in the show. The last phase is the live shows when the public gets to decide who to keep.

Before her performance, aired on Sunday, Miti said she hoped that Lira or Morbee would turn for her. “I know their music and I felt one of them would be ideal for me.” In the end, Miti chose Lira.

“I love Lira’s music and I feel she will take me in the right direction on the show. I like how she carries herself as an artist and I believe I can learn a lot from her.”

Lira had nothing but praise for the Eastern Cape singer.

“I love everything you are. Your voice is so effortless and when you started singing I watched my skin get goosebumps and I was like, yes, that is what I’m looking for.”

The former Bhisho High School pupil said she had tried to enter Idols SA four times but never got anywhere with that. “What I like about The Voice is that the judges choose you because of your voice.

“Your looks have nothing to do with their decision, your voice does all the work for you.”

Miti said The Voice SA gave all singers the same opportunities. “I wanted to try something new and fresh. I am glad I auditioned.”

Miti said her family was musical and she got her singing skills from her father. “We are a family of creative people. If one doesn’t play an instrument then they are singing or acting or in comedy.”

Miti hoped to get some exposure through the show.

“This is an opportunity for me to showcase my talent and hopefully get people who will offer me a chance to make my own music,” she said.

Another Eastern Cape singer who received the nod from the judges is Johan Anker from Port Elizabeth. Anker chose Parlotones’ Kahn Morbee as his vocal coach.
