Multi-award winning gospel producer and former Joyous Celebration music director Nqubeko Mbatha has brought his magic touch to the careers of some of the province’s rising stars.

The Eastern Cape Audio Visual Centre (ECAVC) has roped Mbatha in to help produce albums for their 2016  music development programme.

Artists who got to spend studio time with Mbatha last week include vocalist Nosiviwe Mabona, and gospel outfit Andile Sawule and One Two Double Six.

ECAVC director Sy Ntuli told the Daily Dispatch Mbatha had arrived last Monday, and had worked day and night the entire week at ECAVC recording studios to finish the albums.

“His magic touch is bringing the best out of the gospel outfits whose previous albums also did well, with some even scoring nominations for various awards last year,” said Ntuli.

Ntuli said ECAVC had various programmes aimed at developing Eastern Cape artists, and had joined hands with a number of partners to accelerate development in the province.

Mbatha was lit up about his week. “I was really blown away. I was a bit unsure about what to expect but I got to experience first-hand the talent here. Nosiviwe is versatile and Andile is a brilliant songwriter,” he enthused.

So impressed was he with Sawule that he has now enlisted the young man to write music for his own upcoming album.

Both Mabona and Sawule have relished the experience, and are inspired after the taste of working with an industry great.

Mabona is working on her third album, the second one under ECAVC. Both this one and Sawule’s are due to be released before Easter.

She said the thought of working with Mbatha was a bit daunting at first but she soon realised what a professional and down-to-earth person he was.

“He is very encouraging and calm, and he really understands the music – not just for the sake of making music, but he understands first the word. You have to believe the word first before you can sing about it, and I really appreciated that about him,” she said.

lECAVC has partnered with Business and Arts South Africa to conduct music business workshops aimed at empowering artists.

The two-day workshops will be held today and tomorrow at ECAVC.

The information-sharing sessions will commence at 8.30am on both days, and are free of charge. Artists can register by sending an e-mail to ECAVC: rmdlambuzi@ufh.ac.za or call Rose Mdlambuzi on 043-704-7545 during working hours. — ziphon@dispatch.co.za
