New boutique to boost local artists

Promoting local artists through frequent pop-up exhibitions is what two business partners Yolisa Tshevu and Nomfundo Ralarala aim to do through their new boutique, Yours In Beauty.

The pair recently leased space on 17 Chamberlain Road in East London’s Berea, from which to run their business which they say will focus on everything beautiful – fashion, food and lifestyle – with the primary intention of displaying a variety of arts made by local artists.

Among the displays at the launch on Friday evening were paintings and ceramics by Siko Mququ, Lorraine Bezuidenhout, Qhama Maswana, Louis Pietrucci, Wandile Ntlanganiso and Solomzi Mjayezi, to name a few.

The evening came alive in the interesting space with scintillating lighting and upbeat sounds by local DJ Charl Botha.

Offering a taste of what to look forward to when their eatery opens in April, snacks on the night consisted of shrimp on guacamole fingers, polenta topped with caramelised zucchini, roast beef on croutons, pinotage-poached pear as well as dark chocolate with mango jelly.

Ralarala, 26, said the new venture was heavily influenced by their ambition to promote local artists and provide them with a different platform to display their art.

“I did art in high school, but later followed a career in business studies but my passion for art has always been there. I have always appreciated the work of other artists.”

Ralarala said they had strategically selected Berea because it was the hub for art and designers.

Tshevu said although their eatery would be open daily, with garments made by local fashion designers on display, the first Friday of every month would be dedicated to pop-up exhibitions.

“We want to play around with this space and create a culture of displaying a variety of artists.”

Anne Bryant Art Gallery curator Leon du Preez, who attended the launch, said he was impressed by the work done by the pair.

“It’s a wonderful initiative what they are doing here promoting local artists. It’s something that is not done enough.

“Hopefully through this space a different market will be drawn to local artists. — mbalit@dispatch.co.za
