Minister Mokonyane prays for rain

National Water Week‚ which started on Monday‚ kicked off with a prayer session in Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Zwide township.

“Our efforts to rally our communities must be strengthened which is why we are engaging at all different levels including churches to pray and to help us during this difficult time of water shortages‚” said water and sanitation minister Nomvula Mokonyane.

“As government we are very concerned about this situation and we are making a call to all South Africans to adapt their lives and face the reality that water is a scarce resource that has no substitute.”

She also appealed to the nation “to use the upcoming Easter weekend to intercede for rain”.

In a statement noting that “South Africa is one of the 20 driest countries in the world”‚ Mokonyane said: “We have gone to the length and breadth of our nation to help affected communities and lessen the devastation brought by no rain and drought.

“Like other provinces‚ the Eastern Cape has also received significant support and working with Amatola Water and municipalities we will continue to make the situation better.”
