Mthatha police have arrested three men allegedly found in possession of 369 mandrax tablets with an estimated street value of R37 000.

Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela said the suspects, aged between 20 and 45 years, will appear at the Mthatha Magistrate’s Court charged today facing charges of dealing with drugs.

“The suspects were arrested at York Road in Mthatha at about 7.20pm on Saturday during the stop and search operation. Police stopped a suspicious vehicle, a Mazda 3, searched it and found the drugs,” said Fatyela.

Fatyela said Mthatha was becoming a town where the smuggling of drugs was on the rise.

Meanwhile, Butterworth SAPS cluster task team arrested a 60-year-old man at about 5am on Sunday for possession of an unlicensed fire-arm.

“The suspect was arrested at his home which is at Ngquthu Village near the Kei Bridge. The suspect was arrested following a tip-off that he was in possession of an unlicensed shotgun double barrel that has eight rounds of ammunition.

“The suspect has been charged with possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition,” said police spokesman Captain Jackson Manatha.
