My Pearl Thusi song came out first, says E Cape rapper

Another Eastern Cape rapper has released a song about TV personality Pearl Thusi.

The first was the award-winning Emtee, followed by Eastern Cape rapper Issa Matthews.

The Sterkspruit-born Matthews claims he released the song titled Pearl Thusi before Emtee.

“My song came out on January 18 and Emtee’s one came out on January 22 but I didn’t even know about it.

“Most people thought my song came after Emtee’s but that’s not true. The only reason they knew his song first is because he is famous and I am not there yet,” the 27-year-old said.

Although some have labelled him a copycat, the rapper said he was not bothered by public comments.

“When I first came into the industry most people said I am trying to be another iFani just because I rap in Xhosa, but I didn’t let that affect me.

“I won’t allow this to affect me as well. I know my song is a club banger and most people prefer it over Emtee’s,” he said.

When asked in a recent radio interview whether he was aware of Mathews’s song, Emtee said he was not.

Matthews, who is now based in Pretoria, said Thusi had been promoting his song on her Metro FM show.

“She played it on her show on Metro FM and we talk on Twitter. She likes my song.”

The rapper said he had decided to write the song to honour Thusi for all her hard work in the industry.

“I admire the woman she is. She is an all-rounder in the industry, she is a businesswoman, actor and presenter.

“She really works hard and I am inspired by her hustle,” he said.

Matthews started recording his music in 2006, but in 2008 left the Eastern Cape to study sound engineering.

“I qualified as a sound engineer in 2012 and up until last year I was working but I decided to quit to focus on my music,” he said.

Matthews said he would be releasing an album later in the year.

“Now I am pushing singles to grow my following. I don’t have a large fan- base to release an album just yet. This track Pearl Thusi is my breakthrough song. I hope to gain more followers,” he said. — poliswap@dispatch.co.za
