Mdantsane shuts down due to action

The violent province-wide taxi strike shut down large parts of Mdantsane yesterday.

Thousands of workers were unable to get to their places of employment as hundreds of taxi drivers, blockading every entry point to the country’s second biggest township, burnt tyres, rendering some parts inaccessible.

The township’s main central business district, Highway Taxi Rank, resembled a ghost town as many businesses opted to close shop, fearing that the situation could turn ugly and their businesses looted if they continued with operations.

Gill Ntoni Higher Primary School principal Winkie Mdyogolo, who could not access the township yesterday, said the situation had affected operations at his school.

“We were supposed to be writing exams (yesterday) morning, but we had to reschedule,” he said, adding that 10 pupils scheduled to participate in a provincial chess championship in East London could not attend.

David Mama High School’s deputy principal Zelda Mphunga said they also had to reschedule exams and ask children to go home. — asandan@dispatch.co.za
