United Front to contest 50 wards in BCM

New kids on the political block, the United Front (UF), is set to contest all 50 wards in the Buffalo City Metro in the local government elections.

The party said it had already selected its candidates and tomorrow, Irvin Jim would address a rally in the metro.

Regional deputy chairman King Dyani said the party would tomorrow use the opportunity to commemorate June 16 to introduce the party to the BCM region.

“We have invited National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa’s (Numsa) general secretary Irvin Jim to come and address the people of Mdantsane and also intensify our campaign for the August 3 elections,” said Dyani.

The UF is a formation that emanated from a resolution adopted at Numsa’s special meeting in 2013.

Numsa withdrew its support for the ANC in 2013. After being kicked out of ANC alliance partner Cosatu  the following year, Numsa called for the ruling party’s defeat at the polls.

Dyani said in June last year the Eastern Cape launched its UF structures and started the process required by the Electoral Commission to stand for the upcoming local government elections.

He said the party was confident it would win a couple of wards in the metro.

“We have secured solid ground in a number of wards, however, we are contesting all the 50 wards,” said Dyani.

The party will host its June 16 event in Mdantsane, Zone 10 where they are expecting more than 500 people to attend.

“United Front calls all organisations of civil society, NGOs, the working class and is saying it’s time to come together and challenge the social ills that are as a result of the neoliberal agenda that has become so dominant in our country,” added Dyani. — simthandilef@dispatch.co.za
