Thabo Mbeki turns 74

Former president Thabo Mbeki celebrated his 74th birthday on Saturday.

Mbeki served nine years as the second post-apartheid President of South Africa from 14 June 1999 to 24 September 2008.

With about nine months left to serve of his second term‚ he resigned after being recalled by the ANC’s national executive committee following a conclusion by judge C. R. Nicholson of improper interference in the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA)‚ including the prosecution of Jacob Zuma for corruption.

Among the first to publicly wish Mbeki for his birthday on Saturday was the Congress of the People (COPE)‚ a party formed by former ANC members following his resignation.

“Congress of the People sends its warmest felicitations to Thabo Mbeki on his 74th birthday. It is remarkable that our first President‚ Nelson Mandela was born on 18 July and our second President‚ Thabo Mbeki‚ was born on 18 June.

“COPE wishes the Mbeki family everything of the best on this auspicious day‚” te party said in a statement.
