Chances are half our mayors will go

Three of the six district municipality mayors currently serving in their respective councils are likely to return to office, if the ANC wins the August 3 elections.

The ANC’s national executive committee (NEC) endorsed the nomination of the current Sarah Baartman mayor Kunjulwa Kekana, OR Tambo mayor Nomakhosazana Meth, as well as Joe Gqabi mayor Zibonele Dumzela.

Outspoken Khonza’s chances of serving a second term as ADM mayor were dashed last month when she, along with her comrade and Nkonkobe ANC councillor Nanziwe Rulashe were arrested for allegations relating to the misuse of R2-million of municipal funds.

Talking to the Dispatch yesterday, Xawa said she was looking forward to the challenge.

Xawa, 66, from Bedford, has been a ward councillor in Nkonkobe from 1997 to 2011.
