One person died and scores were displaced after 36 shacks were razed in a fire in Duncan Village during the early hours of Saturday morning.

In a busy weekend for emergency services a pedestrian was killed by a car in Butterworth, another man was arrested for murder in nearby Willowvale and an unidentified man was found dead on Friday night in East London.

East London police spokeswoman Warrant Officer Hazel Mqala said the victim had been attacked by four men.

The body was found in Station Street behind the SA Reserve Bank.

“The attack was reported at 8.25pm on Friday night,” said Mqala, appealing for the public’s assistance in identifying the victim.

“He is estimated to be around 36 years old. He had a single stab wound in the neck.”

The victim was reportedly wearing silver-grey overalls and brown shoes. The spokeswoman urged anyone with information to contact their nearest police station.

Meanwhile, in the Duncan Village fire, the deceased was burnt beyond recognition and Mqala said police had not yet been able to tell whether the body was male or female.

She said DNA analysis would have to be conducted to get more information on the deceased.

The cause of the fire was also not yet known.

lOn the N2 between Butterworth and Ndabakazi Station on Saturday night, a 25-year-old pedestrian died after being involved in a collision with a car.

Police spokesman Captain Jackson Manatha said the incident took place shortly after 7pm.

“The cause of the accident is not known but police are investigating a case of culpable homicide,” he said.

lIn a separate incident, Willowvale police arrested a 41-year-old man for murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Manatha said the suspect, in Mendu village, had been seen chasing boys during an initiation ceremony.

“He allegedly fired shots to scare the boys but in the process shot 23-year-old Athi Ntwalana.

“Police were later informed of the murder and the suspect was arrested.”

A 9mm Norinco pistol with eight rounds was also recovered during the arrest.

The suspect is due in the Willowvale Magistrate’s Court today.

lA 54-year-old man will appear in the Butterworth Magistrate’s Court today after he was arrested with an unlicensed firearm by the Kei Bridge police.

The suspect was arrested in Manqulo village near Kei Bridge around 1am on Saturday.

Manatha said police pounced on the suspect after receiving a tip-off.

“The weapon will be sent for ballistic tests to establish if it had been used in other crimes committed around Butterworth,” he said.
