A Nelson Mandela Bay policewoman can add another title to her CV – that of midwife.
Constable Magda Bezuidenhout of the Kwanobuhle police station in Port Elizabeth helped deliver a baby girl in the early hours of Friday morning.
She was on patrol when a frantic woman stopped her vehicle and told her about a woman in labour in Hoyana Street.
“She responded and found a 21-year-old woman who was about to give birth on the roadside.
“Bezuidenhout opened a van‚ and turned it into a labour van with assistance of her colleagues‚ who brought her essentials such as water and gloves. (Together‚ they) helped a woman to deliver a 3.66kg baby boy‚” police spokesman Sergeant Majola Nkohli said.
“The incident was not the first for Bezuidenhout‚ who also assisted another woman on 28 December 2016.
“The woman‚ who did not want her name to be mentioned‚ was full of praise for Bezuidenhout‚ and further mentioned that she walked few kilometres with stones in her hands to fend off any possible attack on her way to Letitia Bam Hospital‚ which was few metres from where she gave birth.”
