Families wait for Trek4Mandela expedition participants at airport

Family members of the trekkers who took part in the Trek4Mandela expedition during which racing driver Gugu Zulu died‚ waited at the arrivals section at OR Tambo international Airport to welcome their loved ones on Wednesday evening.

Journalists were told at around 6.30pm that the participants had arrived.

One family member was seen holding a bouquet of flowers and a placard that read “Welcome home our Kili heroes“.

Among the trekkers are media personality Penny Lebyane‚ cancer survivor Samantha Pillay‚ journalists Omphitlhetse Mooki and OG Molefe‚ managing director of the Banking Association South Africa Cas Coovadia‚ TV personality Cecile Raubenheimer‚ and former TV presenter Gerry Elsdon.

Zulu died while taking part in the Trek4Mandela expedition on Mount Kilimanjaro on Monday. He complained of having flu-like symptoms on Saturday and posted on his Instagram account that he was “struggling with the

mountain”.
