Nelson Mandela Bay ANC mayoral candidate Danny Jordaan‚ after voting at the Portuguese Club in Summerstrand on Wednesday morning‚ laughed off reports that he had hired lawyers to consult with the FBI regarding the Fifa corruption scandal.

News24 reported on Tuesday that Jordaan had employed Sandton attorney Anthony Norton and senior advocate Gilbert Marcus to engage with authorities in the US.

Addressing the media‚ Jordaan – who hopes to retain his seat after the local government elections – said it was unfortunate that “the DA has come with an apartheid style strategy”.

“What is the charge against me? There is nothing and this is not a democracy.

“This reminds me of Wouter Basson’s dirty tricks campaign and we talk about free and fair elections and then the desperate alliance embarks on an apartheid style‚ Wouter Basson-style dirty tactics.

“It will backfire on them‚” Jordaan said.

Safa chief executive Dennis Mumble said no lawyers had been hired to defend Jordaan and questioned the timing of the News24 report in relation with Wednesday’s elections today.

“ drags the association and its president into a political arena that it has clearly requested all political parties not to do.”
