The man accused of murdering Port Alfred businessman Noel Maddocks has said in his bail application that he acted in self-defence.

Nelson Mandela Township (Nemato) tavern owner Tony Donile said he was attacked by Maddocks when he tried to get into a house he shared with German girlfriend Pia Roser.

Donile however said he did not count the number of times he stabbed Maddocks when asked by prosecutor Johan Carstens to explain why he was stabbed 30 times if it was self-defence.

Donile said he was invited to the house by Roser and that Maddocks attacked him. He said he did not wait for police after the incident or go to a nearby police station to report the incident because he was scared how white policemen would react.

Donile said he did call a black police friend to ask him to fetch him and personally take him to a police station so he could hand himself over. The bail application has adjourned for lunch.
