Mashaba set to announce ‘coalition’ mayoral committee on Friday

Herman Mashaba is set to reward the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) “coalition partners”.

He will populate his mayoral committee by drawing from the ranks of those parties which helped it win Johannesburg on Monday.

The businessman-turned-mayor‚ talking to Radio 702’s Koketso Sachane on Thursday morning‚ however played his cards close to his chest about who would be occupy those top 10 councillor posts as he had yet to inform the members his own party’s 104-strong caucus.

They would be informed‚ Mashaba told Sachane‚ at a meeting on Friday ahead of a noon public announcement.

He also attempted to appease fears of a staff purge when asked about letters sent this week to municipal employees informing them of an imminent skills audit.

Mashaba said “there is absolutely nothing wrong with it” and it was accepted practice in business and “public services worldwide”.

“When you walk into this office‚ it’s important to understand the type of people who are there servicing the people‚” he said.

“If people were not used to this‚ unfortunately‚ they have got to understand that it is important for us to ensure that we turn this Johannesburg into the real ‘world class city’ that it has been promoted to be — which it’s not today‚” Mashaba continued.

He said he was keen to “bring everyone on board” and added: “I can assure you that the majority of staff are so excited‚ looking forward‚ to be working with me‚ the DA and a new administration‚ because for many years they have been subjected to politicking in the office‚ not interested in servicing our people.”

Mashaba said he aimed to have a “professional” administration from the “mayor down to the lowest member of the…public service”. – Tiso Black Star Group Digital
