Students evacuated as veld fires shut classes at NMMU

Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) cancelled classes at three of its campuses on Wednesday after raging veld fires in Summerstrand‚ Port Elizabeth‚ overnight affected large parts of the campuses.

“Students were evacuated the Sanlam Student Village‚ where the fire had got dangerously close‚ and returned when the fire was extinguished‚” said NMMU spokeswoman Zandile Mbabela.

The North‚ South and CSIR campuses were affected.

“Firefighters worked through the night trying to contain the fire. Fortunately nobody was hurt.”
