Motorists can breathe a sigh of relief as Buffalo City Metro (BCM) has completed the “bulk” of its work on Batting Bridge.
With schools reopening on Monday, there has been mounting concern from motorists driving in and out of Beacon Bay every day.
Since the closure of Batting Bridge, large numbers of motorists have been delayed by between 30 minutes to an hour, as traffic gets backed up along all routes in and out of Beacon Bay, especially during peak hours.
A lack of pointsmen directing traffic in the area were some of the challenges motorists also had to deal with. Metro spokesman Samkelo Ngwenya yesterday said the bridge should reopen on Saturday for testing, weather permitting.
“Resurfacing of the road has been completed. Judging by the work that is currently taking place, we are still on course within our deadline.
“By the end of today , we would have replaced four joints.
“Tomorrow , we are planning to replace two more joints.
“We are very aware of the pressure that comes with schools reopening, which means more traffic. Thus far, the weather has been good and we aren’t anticipating any delays.”
The bridge has been closed since July 14 for the week-long bridge maintenance costing at least R2.5-million.
For the duration of the works, motorists have been advised to use alternative routes along the Old Transkei Road and N6, or North East Expressway via the N6 or the N2.
Ngwenya said 15 to 17 pointsmen have been deployed in mornings and evenings to make sure that traffic flows.
