Drop in food prices bring relief

Consumers will be relieved to note that prices of the most basic food items have either dropped or remained the same compared with last month.

Household essentials, such as chicken and potatoes have seen a slight price decrease, with chicken going from R49.99/kg to R49.90/kg and potatoes dropping from R10.99/kg to R9.99/kg, a price decrease of R1.

Only maize meal saw a price increase of R1, going from R8.99 last month to a new price of R9.99.

All the other items remained the same price.

Since last year, the Saturday Dispatch has been monitoring the prices of eight basic food items such as chicken, milk, brown bread, sunflower oil, eggs, maize meal, butternut and potatoes. The prices are sourced from three different supermarkets.

August prices:

  • The price of chicken has dropped from R49.99/kg, to its new price of R49.90/kg, a price decrease of 9c;
  • Potatoes saw a price drop this month, going from R10.99/kg to R9.99/kg;
  • Butternut remained at its July price of R9.99/kg;
  • Maize meal prices saw a slight increase, from R8.99 last month to R9.99 this month;
  • A litre of milk will cost the same as it was in July, at R10.99;
  • Cooking oil still costs R18.99;
  • Brown bread remained at last month’s price of R10.29; and
