Braelyn residents were appalled yesterday morning when a dog dragged a dead foetus out from under a nearby bush and dumped it in front of their homes.
The dog brought the bloodied body to Braelyn’s Milkwood Crescent – an area between Braelyn and Duncan Village – shortly after 10am yesterday, residents said.
East London police spokeswoman Warrant Officer Hazel Mqala confirmed they were investigating a case of pregnancy concealment.
Braelyn and Duncan Village residents have vowed to help police with their investigation.
Hlumelo Hlengiwe, who stays two houses from where the body was dumped by the dog, said they had never seen anything like that in the area.
“It was a scary scene and police were called and they arrived to attend to it.
“This has shocked the community here and people are starting to ask questions,” said Hlengiwe.
Mqala confirmed that the police were called out to the scene.
“The foetus was dragged by the dog and has since been removed by the forensic from the scene,” said Mqala.
No one has been arrested yet, Mqala said.
Duncan Village resident Nwabisa Marambana said she was travelling to Amalinda when she saw the dog worrying at something.
“It looked suspicious and upon looking closer, I noticed it was like a baby.
“Passersby started to look at it and they called the police,” Marambana said.
Hlengiwe said residents had offered to check if any person in the area who was pregnant may have concealed a birth.
“Residents from here and Duncan Village from across the road will do their investigations to assist police on this,” she said.
This comes just barely a week after a newborn baby boy was found dead in a plastic bag in Butterworth.
The little body was found by a security guard who was on duty at Walter Sisulu University’s Bika campus.
The horrified guard saw a dog pulling at a plastic bag and went to investigate.
As the dog was pulling the plastic bag, the security guard saw the body of the baby.
A case of concealment of birth was opened at the Msobomvu police station.
