Butterworth water supply affected after pipe burst
A massive water pipe has burst between Gcuwa dam and the Butterworth water treatment works causing a major leak in the city.

The water supply has been cut since yesterday in an attempt to repair the damaged pipe.

The Mnquma municipality has been reported to be one of the drought-stricken municipalities in the Eastern Cape, and there has recently been a series of scares of possible water shortages.

Amathole district municipality spokesman Siyabulela Makunga said:“ADM has experienced a major leak on the pipeline from Gcuwa to Butterworth water treatment works”.

Makunga said the damage caused by the leakage has not affected any surrounding villages within the Butterworth region.

“ADM has requested the department of water and sanitation to turn off water supply at Gcuwa so as to allow for repairs,” he said.

The spokesman said yesterday their team was already on-site to repair the burst pipe.
