Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan has been invited to give the National Treasury’s take on the country’s social grants fiasco to parliament.
The Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa) decided to make an urgent call to Gordhan to brief them after questioning Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini on Tuesday.
Dlamini‚ who arrived late‚ assured MPs that grants would be paid on time when the current contract with Cash Paymaster Services (CPS) ends on March 31. She maintained there was no “national crisis.”
Rights group Black Sash wants any new contract to pay grants to be supervised by the Constitutional Court.
“Members of Scopa had a brief meeting where it was decided that an urgent call be made for the Minister of Finance to appear before Scopa next week Tuesday to explain the National Treasury’s role and observations of how things unfolded in Sassa subsequent to the Constitutional Court ruling until now‚” said Scopa chairman Themba Godi.
“Scopa would like the Minister of Finance to clarify the National Treasury’s position and understanding of the current contract negotiations with Cash Paymaster Services (CPS) and to confirm and assure the public that social grants will be paid on 1 April 2017.”
