Work on road linking Gonubie and Beacon Bay starts

Work at a multimillion-rand  road project linking Gonubie and Beacon Bay has resumed after years of running incomplete.

In addition to the R195-million used initially, an extra R70-million has been injected for the road.

The project dates as far back as 2010 and has had to go unfinished on a number of occasions while reasons including financial constraints were given by the municipality, residents have had to endure a backlog in traffic.

But that may soon be a thing of the past as Buffalo City Municipality spokeswoman Bathandwa Diamond has confirmed that work has begun on the road.

According to Diamond the seven-phase construction plan commenced in May.

“The City identified a need for a road to link Beacon Bay and Gonubie and doing so opening up areas of under-utilised land for development,” she said.

However the project is still only on the second phase. “The project consists of seven phases and when those are complete the Link Road will run from the robots at Retail Park and Eskom’s head office, all the way to connect to the Gonubie Main Road, just past the Gonubie Police Station,” she added.

“Due to budget constraints the first phase was divided into two phases. Phase 2 of the project will be more complex as it will include the building of bridges. During the first phase, motorist experienced traffic congestion for those who wanted to go to the mall or join the N2 freeway,” she concluded.

This will be another road Gonubie residences will use to ease their traffic flow during the peak hours.

According to Diamond, the project has created a lot of job opportunities having employed 20 people for the current phase alone.
