COPE urges Mbete to help MPs to stop ‘Zuma gravy train of corruption’

The Congress of the People (COPE) has urged Speaker of the National Assembly Baleka Mbete to help MPs stop the Zuma “gravy train of corruption” by allowing the vote on the motion of no confidence in President Jacob Zuma to be held by secret ballot.

COPE President Mosiuoa Lekota said the Constitutional Court had made it clear that “those of us who are elected‚ once elected and having taken our oath of office‚ owe it to the people of South Africa as a whole that no political party can compel a MP to vote against their conscience and against their judgement”.

“It is our view that in the present situation that members of the National Assembly‚ from both some in the ranks of the governing party as well as opposition parties‚ are unified to vote against the Zuma gravy train of corruption.

“COPE urges the Speaker Mbete do what is right for the people of South Africa in order to save our country for tomorrow‚” Lekota said.
