The driver and conductor of a minibus taxi that ploughed into and horrifically killed three little girls in Mdantsane at the weekend are still on the run.
Eyewitnesses spoke of reckless driving and of finding a bottle of brandy in the wreck.
However, despite having tracked down the owner of the taxi, Mdantsane police have not yet made any arrests.
Mdantsane police spokesman Captain Nkosikho Mzuku said the name of the owner of the minibus could not be released.
In an e-mail, he lectured the Dispatch saying: “It is the duty of the journalist to do investigative journalism out there in the community and find the name, not the SAPS.
“We respect people’s rights, young and old,” he said.
Mzuku said: “It is not our policy to disclose our investigation in the media, as it is at a critical stage and our investigation will be jeopardised.”
The Daily Dispatch yesterday reported that four girls aged between seven and 11 were on the sidewalk selling chocolates and sweets when a white Toyota Quantum minibus taxi ran into them. One girl managed to get out of the way.
Witnesses said the taxi driver was entering Mdantsane from town when he tried to overtake a vehicle and lost control of the taxi. He left the road and slammed into the girls.
Eyewitnesses found a bottle of brandy and a soft drink inside the taxi.
Mzuku said: “Allegations of whether there was alcohol or not in the taxi involved in an accident over the weekend, unfortunately forms part of the investigation.”.
