The newly opened Mayfair Hotel in Mthatha has been given a four-star grading by the Tourism Grading Council.

Owned by Billion Group CEO Sisa Ngebulana, the hotel has brought much-needed luxury accommodation to the city.

The Mayfair Hotel adjoins the BT Ngebs mall, with a groundbreaking project lined up for the region later this year, a R150-million casino and entertainment complex, complete with state-of-the-art cinemas.

The Billion Group began aggressively investing in Mthatha two years ago with the development of the first major shopping centre in the region – the R1.4-billion BT Ngebs City mall, named after his entrepreneurial grandfather. Ngebulana, who was born in Mthatha, said he was delighted with the four-star grading as attention to the hotel’s design and detail were carefully considered and executed.

“Mthatha has huge buying power and a lot of economic potential. Mayfair will attract patronage from business and governmental travellers who frequent the area.”

He added that Mthatha, historically, has experienced great pressure on its supply of local accommodation, with many visitors to the area having to travel to neighbouring towns and cities.

“The Mayfair is intended to ease this pressure.”

Billion Group commercial director Vuyokazi Njongwe, who was intimately involved in the construction of the hotel, said: “It is so exciting to get this four-star grading.

“I’m delighted that we can bring something like this to Mthatha. It is my home town and therefore a place that is very close to my heart,” Njongwe said.

For those staying at the hotel, there is a choice of 88 standard rooms, two executive suites, a presidential suite and a luxurious penthouse suite.

Last week, SA Tourism CEO Sisa Ntshona described the hotel as a coup for tourism in the region.
