The South African Student Congress (Sasco) has retained control of the Nelson Mandela University’s Student Representative Council (SRC), following today’s elections.

Sasco NMU spokeswoman Nobathembu Koko said the victory had led to a positive atmosphere around campus. Out of 21 seats, Sasco won 16, Daso will have four and EFF one.

“We won all campuses including George. Out of the five campuses, the most challenging to win was North Campus which is white-dominated.’’

Sasco last won the NMU SRC elections in 2014 and Daso took charge in the past two years.  The university could not hold the elections last year because of the #FeesMustFall Campaign and an interim structure made up of all student political organisations was set up for student affairs at the beginning of 2017.

Koko attributed Sasco’s success to their visibility in student issues.  “We worked hard from January. We were working hand-in-hand with the students and we were able to help register over 900 students for free. This includes accommodation and assistance with food and book allowance.”

She said they had been instrumental  in  transforming the institution. “This includes issues of insourcing of workers. We have been at the forefront in issues of safety of the students, especially sexual violence. We went door-to-door --  classrooms and everywhere on campus -- and this campaign was led by an innovated leadership of Sasco," she said.

A media briefing is scheduled to take place on Friday.
