With the festive season fast approaching, two Eastern Cape municipalities are preparing their beaches to be safe and people-friendly by inviting people trained to be lifeguards to apply for seasonal lifeguard posts.
Buffalo City Metro advertised posts for 36 of lifeguards in yesterday’s Daily Dispatch for December and January. The advert stated that the posts will run from December 9 to January 31.
BCM invited applicants who were 16 years and older with a Grade 8, a first aid certificate, one year’s experience as a lifeguard, as well as a surf proficiency award (SPA) certificate, which is the standard qualification required to perform coastal lifeguard duties.
Guards will be on duty from 7am to 5pm from December 10 and hours will increase from December 28 to January 1 from 7am to 7pm to cater for the New Year influx, said BCM spokeswoman Bathandwa Diamond.
Successful applicants will be required to rescue drowning swimmers, patrol the city’s beaches and assess their condition, render first aid to injured people and operate rescue equipment in emergencies.
BCM said the salary grade for the posts was from R124590 per annum to R161729, which is roughly R10382 to R13774 a month.
Diamond said: “The seasonal posts have helped decrease the number of drownings at our beaches and cover a number of places where normally people do not go in numbers.”
Diamond said the posts were for BCM beaches at Gonubie, Kaysers, Nahoon, Bonza Bay, Eastern, Orient and Water World at Leaches Bay, as well as the beaches at Hickmans River, Gulu, Winterstrand and Kidds Beach.
“Successful candidates will start work on December 9 for two months following all the human resources processes.”
Ndlambe municipality advertised posts for 21 lifeguards for its contractual blue flag and seasonal swimming beaches two weeks ago.
The posts are for the Kariega and Kelly’s blue-flag beaches in Kenton-on-Sea and Port Alfred, as well as the Kleinemonde beach, Bushmans slipway beach, Boknes beach and Fish River mouth.
Ndlambe’s guards are expected to earn R7675 per month.
