Armed heist at busy store

Police have launched a manhunt for a “chubby” gunman who robbed a busy Vincent grocery store in broad daylight yesterday and made off with an undisclosed amount of money.

The robbery took place at Balfour Park mall’s the Food Lovers’ Market, formerly Fruit and Veg City, at midday in front of terrified staff and customers.

Mdantsane police spokesman Captain Nkosikho Mzuku said a case of business robbery was being investigated by the Cambridge police. Workers told the Dispatch yesterday they felt traumatised by the incident.

According to a staffer, anonymous as he is not authorised to speak to the media, the “chubby” miscreant, roughly in his 30s, took a large amount of cash from a safe. “He ran to a Toyota Corolla parked near Checkers. The car had occupants in it.”

A store manager had no comment when the Dispatch visited yesterday. Anyone with helpful information on the incident is urged to contact the investigating officer, Warrant Officer Louis Steyl, on (043)709-7500 or 071-475-1674.
