Women in dock in ‘hitman’ case

Mdantsane residents yesterday flocked to the magistrate’s court in NU1 to catch a glimpse of two women arrested in connection with plotting to kill their husbands.

Nomqondiso Tembu, 50, and Busiswa Nabi, 41, appeared in the dock alongside Cape Town accused Simphiwe Wili, 47, whom the state alleges carried out a hit on Tembu’s husband, Vusumzi Tembu.

Vusumzi was killed on February 14 and his body found with a bullet wound near the Sisa Dukashe Stadium.

He had been returning home from watching the Premier Soccer League game between Chippa United and Mamelodi Sundowns.

At the court, community members carried black-and-white printouts of photographs of the late Vusumzi. Others carried placards demanding “no bail”.

It is the state’s contention that Tembu hired Wili for R100 000 to kill her husband.

It further contends that Nabi consulted with Tembu over the services of a hitman but police got wind of the plot and thwarted a second hit before it could happen. The second target was Nabi’s estranged husband Ludumo Nabi.

Tembu and Wili have been charged with murder and conspiracy to commit murder in respect of Vusumzi’s death.

She faces an additional charge of conspiracy to commit murder with Nabi in the second case.

State prosecutor Nomfusi Mtyobile told magistrate Nolundi Mkwali that the two cases would be tried separately.

Mkwali said this meant that two magistrates would be roped in to preside over the bail application.

The magistrate was disappointed the cases could not be merged, saying one bail ruling would automatically influence the other.

The prosecutor said the applications would be heard on December 6. The date was not welcomed by Nabi’s attorney Mark Fredericks, who told the court he was ready to argue and motivate for the granting of bail yesterday.

Mkwali dismissed the submission, saying Nabi was facing a charge with Tembu, who was an accused in the first case.

The cases needed to be heard on the same day, the magistrate said.

Wili has enlisted the services of East London attorney Ntsikelelo Manyisane.

Tembu is being represented by attorney Siviwe Nxadi.

The formal bail application was postponed to December 6. —
