Time for SACP to reclaim its ‘independent profile’

Re-elected Eastern Cape SACP provincial secretary Xolile Nqatha said yesterday the newly elected structure would champion a reaffirmation of the communist party’s “independent profile” and avoid going down with the ANC.

Nqatha was re-elected for a fourth term at the weekend with 361 votes against Simphiwe Tobela’s 340 .

A jovial Nqatha, who also serves on the ANC EC provincial executive committee, said the SACP needed to reclaim its independent profile from the governing party now more than ever before.

“If the ANC goes down, the party will go down because in the eyes of our people we are one and the same organisation,” he said.

“Therefore the SACP has to jack up in building its independent profile as this distinct organisation and we must articulate more of what we represent and what kind of society we are fighting for.”

This, according to Nqatha, would be done through the SACP having its own communist and socialist manifesto instead of throwing its weight behind the ANC every time there was an election.

He believes that this will in turn help the SACP to be in an alliance that has solid preconditions with the ANC “to have an effective and a respectable alliance” as a distinct formation.
