Students booted out of nursing school

Ten nursing students have been kicked out of nursing school in East London after nursing regulatory body -- the South African Nursing Council -- discovered that they didn't meet minimum requirements to study nursing.

The first-year students, at the Eastern Cape government's Lilitha Nursing College East London campus, were expelled on Thursday -- three months into their four-year course.

The Eastern Cape department of health spokesman Sizwe Kupelo said the department has launched an internal investigation into how the undeserving students managed to enrol.

Kupelo confirmed that the students were based at the Cecilia Makiwane Hospital and Frere Hospital.

The students have refused to leave the campus demanding a letter of removal -- a move which has sparked 27 lectures to refuse to teach until they have been removed. Teaching and learning activities have come to a halt at both Cecilia Makiwane and Frere hospital sites.
